Job Description

Our customer located on Mercer Island, WA is looking for a Finance Manager to work on their GAAP Analysis Reporting team for their Life Insurance subsidiary company, reporting to the Director of Financial Operations.  The responsibilities of this role include coordinating the financial statements and reporting processes, regulatory filings, and financial presentations for internal and external parties.  It is also important that the person in this role stay current on pending regulatory changes for applicability at the Life companies, including AICPA, FASB, IFRS, NAIC, and state insurance departments, and provide support in the implementation of new accounting guidance.

 

 Position Requirements

  • Coordinates the department effort to complete monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities; maintains ongoing financial controls to ensure accurate and timely results.
  • Responsible for professional and technical development of staff; responsible for hiring accounting staff and developing performance plans and performance evaluations for direct reports.
  • Responsible for the preparation of accurate and timely internal and external financials including GAAP and IFRS audited financial statements. 
  • Coordinate the process for audited financial statements. 
  • Coordinate ongoing audit and review process, including preparation and/or review of financial statement analytics, supporting schedules, and roll-forwards, and interaction with external auditors.
  • Manages the preparation of monthly reconciliations and related analysis.
  • Coordinates work flow and procedures, sets priorities for FAR area
  • Maintains policies and procedures for accounting practices within scope of the role, while ensuring adequate and current documentation in all file preparation according to ICF guidelines.
  • Reviews accounting procedures, work papers and reports, both mechanically and manually generated, recommending changes and implementing revisions as needed. Reviews work of assigned personnel as part of financial close, and provide guidance as necessary.
  • Evaluates effectiveness and efficiency of accounting systems and recommends enhancements as needed.
  • Coordinates with other departments to calculate and post accrual transactions in the accounting system. Supervises assigned personnel.

Qualifications

Experience Requirements

  • 5 - 7 years Life Insurance Accounting Experience - this might be within a Life Insurance Co. or with a Public Accounting Firm.  IFRS / GAAP / STAT.  Most candidates should have AT LEAST GAAP and STAT experience 
  • 2 - 3 years experience managing 3 or more people. 
  • Experienced with the management of processes and workflows with the responsibility to delegate tasks, develop/train people and team.
  • The Ideal Candidate will have at a minimum P&C Insurance experience, but preferably with Life Insurance experience. 

 

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with SAP, PeopleSoft or other ERP system
  • Advanced MS Word and Excel skills
  • Candidate must be articulate, understandable, concise, and conversant and be comfortable speaking and working with all levels within the organization
  • Strong Attention to Detail is necessary as successful candidate will be reviewing the work of multiple staff and need to explain results to senior management
  • Demonstrated Ability to build good working relationships and partnerships with other units
  • Ability to work overtime during month/quarter/year end close

 

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, CPA, CMA or equivalent
  • Master’s Degree preferred
